18% of Hospital Patients Suffer Harm

According to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, almost one fifth of all hospital patients were harmed by medical mistakes.  Nearly 3% sustained sufficient harm to cause death, and another 3% suffered enough harm to cause permanent injury.  8.5% had life-threatening incidents.  Hospital errors and medical mistakes continue to be very high, and cause approximately 100,000 deaths per year.  Read more
